Rajesh Uppal, Executive Officer (IT) and CIO, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. talks to CIO&Leader, keeping the Vision 2020 in perspective.

Excerpts from the interview:

Scenarios that are likely to impact your industry in the year 2020.

Scaling up is one big area for us to work on. Customer expectations are changing now. They have lots of exposure to visibility across the globe and their expectations are very similar. So as an organization, how to support and manage their expectations is going to the second big area which we have to work on. Third is the value or efficiency of the business has to improve continuously. Continuous innovation and improvement in business, compared to competition, will also impact our business altogether. Last and not the least is compliance. The compliance requirement to our industry is going to be very high, right from security, government and global regulations.

What should be a CIO’s agenda for 2020?

How the organizations are continuously innovating, setting a new benchmark or continuously raising the bar is one of the most important things an organization needs to work on. The second area which is important for us is having a good team of people who can manage it for us. How do we make capability of your team, both IT and business capabilities are also there. Third is the IT infrastructure and here, it needs to change from a typical IT infrastructure to agile one, both from infrastructure and architecture of your infrastructure.

Concerns you foresee with rapid involvement of technology in 2020.

Going forward, not only IT level capability, but also business level capability needs to develop. Here, the ability of user to exploit the IT solution and ability to change as an organization are the key challenges.

What are your personal goals for the year 2020?

I’ve been CIO for 17 years now and am transitioning into a business leader going forward. One thing I’ve learnt is you have keep evolving yourself and for me, the goal is to learn to be a better leader. Also, creating leaders within my teams to enable them to take more responsibility is another goal for me.
