CIO@2020: Interaction with Vipul Anand, Group CIO, Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. - CIO&Leader

Vipul Anand, Group CIO, Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. talks to CIO&Leader, keeping the Vision 2020 in perspective.

Excerpts from the interview:

What should be a CIO’s agenda in 2020?

The focus in 2020 will be three things: how you can embed intelligence algorithms into your business, how you can utilize big data availability into your business and how you can have more and more smart machines into your business. Gone are the days when we talked about the transaction layer; now, we are talking about analytics and mobility. The kind of data that is available for the business decision-makers is going to be humongous and therefore, as CIOs, we should be ready to handle all sorts of data. Most of us are talking about automation and digitally enabled organizations, whether it is the transaction layer, analytics layer, mobility layer or optimizing processes. What is required is intelligent automation whereby you can reduce the burden on human beings. What we will continuously do is revisit our technology investments.

Challenges that will impact your industry in 2020?

It is not going to be the technology availability which will be a challenge but the adoption. Adoption totally depends on the human mindset and the basic educational standards of the ecosystem. The biggest challenge is going to be how do you have the right set of people in your team, whether in-house or outsource teams, OEM or partner community. Having the right set of people to manage the technology is going to be the focus.

The cost of adopting the technology is going to reduce but the cycle time of utilizing the technology and refreshing it with new technology is going to be a concern because your business will be much more demanding than what it is today.

Personal goals for year 2020?

Empower the young population to boost the ecosystem. The young population needs right direction and knowledge, without which you can go in the wrong direction behind them. So my focus will be more and more service towards the society.
