Atanu Roy, Senior Vice President & CIO, Head – Global Information Technology, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., talks to CIO&Leader, keeping the Vision 2020 in perspective.
Excerpts from the interview:
Scenarios that are likely to impact your industry by 2020?
Earlier, the regulatory aspect was how manual processes were ensuring data integrity. Now, the way in which data integrity is ensured through computerized systems will be a key challenge as well as an imperative for the industry. There would be other business pressures related to challenges in terms of volume of businesses, competition in the generic market, price pressures as a result of new companies coming to say, the US market. So we need to respond by launching more products, segment markets more accurately, improve our supply chain to be more efficient in a given condition.
What will your agenda comprise of in 2020?
New technology to significantly transform our supply chain capability—this is something that we are focusing on. We also want to make our labs and manufacturing automated and ensure there is data integrity. We also want to ensure many of our manufacturing labs have connected systems and execution systems linked to PLCs, Level II systems and ERPs. We need to get a visibility of real-time performance of different processes and systems, thus empowering our people to get a visibility of how well their processes are working, how well their performance is in real-time and improve on it accordingly. So our agenda is to automate processes, have connected enterprise and gather significant amount of analytics which would help in decision-making.
How will the rapid evolution of technology impact your industry in the year 2020?
While we are automating and getting productivity out of it, the concern is if we don’t have high availability systems, we would be sometimes in a scenario where the whole environment might not work. Sometimes, things might not be in our hands, for example we might want to create a high availability, robust system and integrate it and depend on service providers for it to ensure the bandwidth and network is there along with access to our remote factory locations. Thus, we need to have the entire ecosystem working together. So one of the challenges for us is the way we design a very availability system, which also takes care of the infrastructure that is with our network partner.
What are your personal goals for the year 2020?
I want to keep myself updated with some amount of deliberate learning on a regular basis. Also, keep myself fit and be more professional in Yoga!
