App Delivery Controller: All You Need To Know

Cloud has enabled enterprises to address their growth plans by reducing IT labour costs, eliminating software defects and improving quality. Shibu Paul, Regional Sales Director – India, ME and SEA, Array Networks, talks on how to enable customers to remote access and securely manage cloud services.

What are the drivers of Application Delivery Controller (ADC)? Which are the emerging trends in the domain?

Adoption of cloud technology by SME’s & large enterprise: SMEs are constantly expanding in business and reach. The cloud technology has enabled enterprises to smoothly address their growth plans. With its current rate of cloud and business analytics adoption, the Indian SME market is expected to attain the highest IT expenditure growth. Unified gateway provides secure remote access and allows customers to securely manage the cloud services.

The key benefits of cloud adoption among SMEs

• Reduction in IT labour cost by up to 50 per cent in configurations, operations, management and monitoring

• Reduction in server and application provisioning cycle times from weeks to minutes

• Improvement in quality, eliminating up to 30 per cent of software defects

• 40 per cent lowering in end-user IT support costs

Financial inclusion and expansion of banking technologies to remote areas: Array’s ADC appliances help in securing the internet traffic and provide security. Array enterprise remote access solutions are able to support up to hundreds of fully separate communities of interest and tens of thousands of concurrent users on a single system.

IPv4 to IPv6 migration drive: ADCs are solving more challenges than ever before, facilitating migration to IPv6 and addressing the unique and growing demands of mobile application delivery. With Array’s ADC, the enterprises can host IPv6 network and host ISP links with IPv6 address sets and a backend IPv4 network.

DC - DR high availability: RBI mandates all the banks to have their DC-DR to be operationally ready and conduct regular audits.

What are some the latest challenges in Application Delivery Networking?

Elections have virtually slowed the pace of eGovernance projects, which will have impact on Application Delivery Networking business.

WAF Integration into ADC: One of the key challenges is when organisations start requesting for WAF functionality in the ADC. WAF is very resource intensive, and hence takes out the ADC performance when integrated with ADC. While we have the basic WAF functionality in Array devices, we strongly recommend customers to look at separate WAF device if the security is of major concern.

Cloud migration is very slow: Compatibility, interoperability and performance concerns have made IT administrators comfortable to move their complex core applications to the cloud. But migrating applications among clouds is not easy. The complexity of cloud computing presents new availability and reliability challenges. Security issues are very critical in cloud migration.

Channel skills in selling Application Delivery Networking solution: Sometimes servers become unresponsive or overburdened. We must ensure that applications experience an uninterrupted service. To improve performance of applications for remote workers is a challenge.

What are the evolving customers’ demands on the same?

Virtualised ADN solutions: Customers need the platform for application availability and also ADN solutions need to provide cost-effective availability in customer premises environments. A unique access point is required for guests and employees that help them access the application and thereby utilising the computer resources, and ensure that the performance is consistent of the application.

Multiple instances on a single appliance: Customers will have the requirement to implement the ADN solution across all the branches. By doing so, we can point out the benefits of our solution to the customers.

What is your advice to the IT managers on how to leverage new technologies around application delivery optimisation?

Focus on user experience. Build skill sets around application performance and acceleration – as it will give competitive advantage in the market place. Provide the additional security for customers. With new technologies, it has to be easy to implement and administer the application.
