CtrlS Datacenters is working with Ciena to upgrade its metro optical network infrastructure across Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, New Delhi, and Noida. The project covers five metro networks connecting nine data centres and is expected to provide up to 100 Tb/s of capacity.
The deployment is part of a Managed Optical Fiber Network (MOFN) initiative for a leading hyperscaler. CtrlS said the network expansion is aimed at supporting rising bandwidth requirements associated with artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud services.
Five metro networks connect nine data centres
The project will extend optical connectivity across five major Indian metro areas. The network will connect nine CtrlS data centres and provide higher-capacity links between facilities.
For hyperscalers and enterprises, data centre interconnection is becoming an important part of network infrastructure as cloud services and AI workloads generate greater traffic between facilities. CtrlS said the upgrade is intended to support high-speed connectivity across its metro footprint.
Sridhar Pinnapureddy, founder and CEO of CtrlS Datacenters, said the company is seeing increased demand from enterprises and hyperscalers for data centre interconnect services.
“Ciena’s optical innovations and network management capabilities strengthen our ability to provide resilient network services that meet the performance expectations of the world’s most demanding digital businesses,” Pinnapureddy said.
Ciena technology forms the network layer
CtrlS is deploying Ciena’s WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e)-powered Waveserver platform and 6500 Reconfigurable Line System (RLS) as part of the project.
Ciena Services will provide end-to-end project management. The company’s Navigator Network Control Suite will also be used to automate network operations and support service delivery.
The combination of optical transport equipment, network management, and project services is intended to give CtrlS a managed infrastructure layer across the five metro networks.
AI and cloud demand drives capacity requirements
The expansion comes as CtrlS links its infrastructure plans to increasing demand from cloud services and AI workloads in India.
Prashant Ramesh Malkani, vice president and general manager for India at Ciena, said CtrlS has been expanding its data centre roadmap as India’s digital economy grows.
“With this upgrade, CtrlS is boosting network performance to accelerate the next wave of digital adoption in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital markets,” Malkani said.
The project illustrates how data centre operators are increasing optical network capacity alongside the expansion of cloud and AI infrastructure. For CtrlS, the five-city deployment adds a managed optical network layer connecting its facilities while supporting the bandwidth requirements outlined in the project.
The company said the broader MOFN deployment will help deliver high-speed connectivity for India’s growing cloud and AI-driven network requirements.
