Vertiv unveils Avocent MergePoint Unity 2 Switch to expand its IT portfolio

Vertiv has expanded its IT management hardware with the release of the Vertiv Avocent MergePoint Unity 2. This keyboard, video, and mouse (KVM) switch platform provides centralised control for IT devices across enterprise data centres, branch offices, and edge locations. The system allows technicians to diagnose and configure hardware remotely, reducing the need for physical site visits.

As organisations move workloads to distributed edge environments, managing infrastructure becomes more complex. This new switch serves as a single control point. It allows IT teams to maintain visibility over their systems from a remote location. The hardware supports remote UEFI and BIOS firmware access, which is necessary for system updates and hardware troubleshooting.

Security and compliance standards

The Avocent MergePoint Unity 2 meets FIPS 140-3 cryptographic standards. This ensures the device provides encryption suitable for government and high-security enterprise environments. To prevent unauthorised access, the switch includes smart card and Common Access Card (CAC) authentication.

IT managers can set specific user-permission controls to limit who can access different parts of the infrastructure. The platform also protects systems by blocking unverified firmware and software. These security measures help protect sensitive data in sectors like finance, healthcare, and government operations.

Operational features and space optimisation

The switch includes Virtual Media capabilities. This feature allows users to mount drives remotely to install applications or perform software updates. This helps minimise downtime by allowing several tasks to occur simultaneously across different locations. Both local and remote users can navigate the system through a browser-based interface. At the rack level, local hotkey support allows for quick task execution.

The physical design of the KVM switch focuses on space preservation. It features a compact build that fits into a single rack unit when used with the Vertiv Avocent Local Rack Access (LRA) Console. In large-scale applications, the switch integrates with the Vertiv Avocent MP1000 Management Platform. This integration allows for centralised control across an entire enterprise network.

Analysis of remote management trends

The release of this hardware follows a broader trend toward remote-first IT operations. Many companies now operate small, unstaffed data centres at the edge of their networks. These locations require tools that provide the same level of control as a local connection. By providing BIOS-level access, KVM switches like the MergePoint Unity 2 allow engineers to recover crashed systems without traveling to the site.

This approach lowers travel costs and speeds up repair times. The inclusion of FIPS 140-3 standards suggests that security is no longer an optional add-on but a core requirement for remote management tools. As regulatory pressure on data privacy increases, hardware manufacturers are building security protocols directly into the management layer of the data centre.
