The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has signed a five-year agreement with the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) to strengthen cybersecurity and digital forensics across India’s digital infrastructure. The partnership aims to improve resilience in systems that support the country’s digital identity framework.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) brings together two key public institutions to collaborate on research, security audits, and skill development in emerging technology areas.

Focus on cybersecurity and forensic readiness

The agreement outlines a structured approach to address growing cybersecurity challenges. UIDAI’s infrastructure, which underpins Aadhaar and related services, is a critical component of India’s digital public infrastructure. Strengthening its defenses has become a priority as cyber threats grow in scale and sophistication.

The MoU was exchanged between UIDAI CEO Vivek Chandra Verma and Prof. (Dr.) S.O. Junare, Director of NFSU’s Gujarat campus. Senior officials from both organizations were present at the signing.

According to Verma, the collaboration is aimed at reinforcing security and forensic capabilities that support India’s digital systems. He noted that the initiative will add stronger safeguards to the country’s digital identity ecosystem.

Six key areas of collaboration

The partnership is built around six focus areas designed to cover both technical and human resource aspects:

  • Academic and professional development programs
  • Information security and system integrity measures
  • Development of forensic infrastructure and labs
  • Technical support for cybersecurity operations
  • Joint research in areas such as AI, blockchain, deepfake detection, and cryptography
  • Student placement and outreach opportunities

These pillars combine immediate operational support with long-term research and talent development.

Building skills and research capacity

A key part of the collaboration is capacity building. The agreement includes pathways for NFSU students to gain practical exposure and placement opportunities, helping create a pipeline of trained professionals in cybersecurity and digital forensics.

The research component will also focus on emerging risks, including deepfakes and AI-driven threats, which are becoming more relevant for identity systems.

Strengthening digital public infrastructure

India’s digital public infrastructure has expanded rapidly in recent years, with Aadhaar playing a central role in identity verification. As usage grows, so does the need for stronger security frameworks and forensic capabilities to investigate incidents.

This collaboration reflects a broader push by government institutions to combine academic research with real-world deployment. By aligning expertise from both sides, UIDAI and NFSU aim to build a more secure and resilient digital ecosystem over the next five years.
